چکیده

A new method for the reconstruction of two-dimensional periodic structures from scattered fareld data is presented. The approach is based on the recently developed \Methods of Variation of Boundaries" (MVB) for the solution of forward scattering problems. Here, the inverse problem is formulated as that of minimization of an appropriate nonlinear least-squares cost functional. The analytic continuation ideas inherent to MVB are then advanced to enable a global line search at each step of a proposed conjugate gradients algorithm. Through a number of numerical examples it is demonstrated that such globalization may be necessary to overcome the nonconvexity of the cost which, in turn, is shown to persist even when the global minimizer is known to be unique. Mystery of the double limit in homogenization of finitely or perfectly conducting periodic structures.

We show that the difference in the effective medium properties of perfectly or finitely conducting short-period gratings is because for finitely conducting gratings it is possible to completely homogenize the electromagnetic field vector components, contrary to perfectly conducting gratings. As a consequence, for aluminum in the microwave domain, two possible effective media can be found, depen...

Fabrication of High-eciency Multilayer-coated Binary Blazed Gratings in the Euv Regime

Improving the eciency of soft X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) gratings by way of multilayer re¯ection coatings has been under investigation for many years. Here we present the fabrication and characterization of binary blazed gratings designed to operate in the 14 nm wavelength region. These binary gratings are stepped approximations to the ideal sawtooth blazed-grating pro®le and are fabr...

The Failure of “Classic” Perturbation Theory at a Rough Neumann Boundary Near Grazing

Rice’s “classic” perturbation theory predicts an erroneous limit at grazing for vertically polarized plane wave scatter from an infinite perfectly conducting rough surface; likewise, the attendant result for the specularly reflected mode also fails at grazing. We show where and why in the system of perturbational equations this difficulty occurs. We then reformulate the perturbational approach ...

Non-Bloch plasmonic stop-band in real-metal gratings.

Recent studies of plasmon surface wave (PSW) propagation in short-period perfectly conducting gratings have shown formation of stop-band that are not linked to the interaction between two (counter) propagating surface waves. We study the properties of this stop-band in real metals. While for both perfectly conducting and real metals the propagation constant of PSW grows with the groove height, ...

Fast spectral methods for the shape identification problem of a perfectly conducting obstacle

We are concerned with fast methods for the numerical implementation of the direct and inverse scattering problems for a perfectly conducting obstacle. The scattering problem is usually reduced to a single uniquely solvable modified combined-field integral equation (MCFIE). For the numerical solution of the M-CFIE we propose a new high-order spectral algorithm by transporting this equation on th...
